I find it particularly fascinating that these early commercial flights took place within re-used military planes. This instance stands in stark contrast to the manner in which the general population operates today without having any insight or connection to the military--its people or technology. I don't think this separation is good, actually, as it allow people to disconnect from the reality of war and military aggression. The fact that military operates unseen and disconnected allows it to become invisible. Perhaps I am mistaken, but when I think about these early years of aviation, I find it fascinating that old military planes were used. And how in this inter-war period people were so very aware of war; its reality was inescapable, even in the skies.
